How to play

1

Chess is a two-player game on an eight by eight board. White moves first, and then you alternate one move at a time. Each piece moves in its own way. Pawns step forward one square and capture diagonally. Rooks move along ranks and files. Bishops move on diagonals. The queen combines rook and bishop. The king moves one square in any direction. Knights jump in an L shape and are the only pieces that can pass over others.

2

The aim is checkmate: the opposing king is attacked and has no legal escape. You may not leave your own king in check. Castling is a one-time move that tucks the king away and brings a rook to the center, if the squares between them are empty and the king is not in check. A pawn that reaches the far rank promotes, usually to a queen. If no checkmate is possible, or if the same position repeats under the standard rules, the game can be drawn.

Play with friends

To play Chess with friends, create a private room on this page. GameBoba gives you a link. Send it in a chat or read it out. Anyone with the link opens it in a browser and takes a seat. They do not need an account. A guest session is enough to play. The room stays private unless you choose a public lobby, which lets other people find it. Quick match is the other path: it pairs you with a person who is already waiting, so you do not have to send a link. The room itself is a live game, not a list of instructions.

Variants and modes

Chess here is two players. A private room is you and one friend, which is the two-player game people mean by playing online together. Quick match is also two people: you and someone the queue finds. A public room can be joined by one other person. There is no mode against the computer. If you were looking for a bot, this page will not start one. Both seats are people, on their own phones or computers, in the same room.
