Categories online with friends

Categories is free in the browser, with no download and no signup. The round stays on this screen.

1 player solo, or 2–6 on one screen

How to play

1

Categories is a letter round played on this page. A letter is drawn from the alphabet. Every player fills the same list: a name, a place, an animal, a food, a job, and a color, each starting with that letter. You have sixty seconds. Anyone can press Stop to end the round early. Empty boxes score nothing. An answer that does not start with the letter scores nothing.

2

After the timer, the page compares answers. A unique valid answer scores ten. An answer that another player also wrote scores five. In a solo round, every valid answer scores ten, because there is nobody to share it with. Umlaute are not drawn as letters here. If you write an answer that begins with ä, ö, or ü, it counts as a, o, or u. The point is speed and a word the others did not pick.

3

This round stays on one screen. Solo is you and the timer. Pass and play is two to six names on the same phone or computer, and you hand the device around or sit together. It is free and it runs in the browser. It does not open a live online room. Friends who open this link on their own phones are not in your round unless they are looking at this same screen.

One letter, sixty seconds. A unique answer scores 10. A shared answer scores 5.

Play with friends

Friends play Categories on this same screen. Add their names, start the round, and pass the phone or share the keyboard. That is the with-friends mode for this game today. Sending the page link lets someone else open Categories, but it does not put them in your letter or your timer. There is no private room code that syncs this round across devices yet. Solo is the same board with one name, when you want a minute against the clock.

Variants and modes

Categories has two modes on this page. Solo is one player, one letter, and sixty seconds. Pass and play is two to six named players on one device. You do not get a separate two-player online room or a four-player online room for this game yet. The variant people ask for, playing with friends, is the shared screen. Scoring changes with the mode: solo pays ten for every valid answer, and a group pays ten for a unique answer and five for a shared one.
